What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is defined as a trancelike state, artificially induced, in which a person has a heightened suggestibility. It has also been called an altered state of awareness. In the past, it was thought that it was a sleeplike state (Hypnos is a Greek word that means God of sleep). However, there is a specific state that the brain enters into when we are more responsive to positive suggestion, as if between sleep.

For a more scientific explanation: When we are awake we are in a beta state, beta wave is the term used to designate the frequency range of brain activity above 12 Hz (12 transitions or cycles per second). As you become more relaxed you drift into alpha (8-12Hz), alpha waves are commonly detected during periods of relaxation, such as two thirds of the time you are in front of the TV. Alpha is the beginning of hypnosis and the alpha waves are thought to represent the activity of the visual cortex in an idle state. There are other more relaxed states called theta and deltTheta (4-8Hz) rhythms are observed during some sleep states, and in states of quiet focus, for example meditation and deep hypnosis. Finally, delta wave is a large, slow (2 Hz or less) brain wave associated with deep sleep.

Is hypnosis safe?

Yes. Hypnosis is a natural and normal state of mind which we access many times in the day and are not even aware of this. It’s the same relaxed state that we are in upon awakening and when we go to sleep, or when you ‘zone out’ in front of the TV. This is the natural alpha state.   Return to top of page

Can hypnosis make me do something against my will?

No. You never do anything against you will. If there is a suggestion that is in conflict with your morals or values your mind will simply reject it.   Return to top of page

Can everyone be hypnotized?

Yes, we enter this natural state many times in a day.   Return to top of page

What is the subconscious mind?

Your subconscious mind is the part of you that stores all the information about you such as your memories, emotions, beliefs and patterns of behaviour. It is also responsible for all automatic bodily functions like breathing, blood pressure and hormone regulation.   Return to top of page

Can hypnosis really help me heal?

Yes, you have a powerful mind and a reactive body. You are constantly growing new cells and all the cells in your body right now will not be there in a year. Yet every new cell get it's information from the old cell as it dies off, and so in the case of any trauma or injury, the new cell is instructed to form in the same way as the old cell. However, it has been documented and researched that this can change and using hypnosis we can rewire that message as we use the wonderful subconscious mind to direct it towards healing. Healing can become more rapid after surgery, breasts can enlarge and cancer can be reduced. All you have to do is to be open to the process, want it to happen and allow it to happen.   Return to top of page

How many sessions will I need?

Everyone is different and so this is hard to judge. You can quit smoking in one session if you are really motivated and have a high level of suggestibility. Typically Claire likes to see people for at least 5-6 sessions. That way you are able address both presenting concerns and also explore and change the underlying issues with the age regression techniques. Each client is given a Hypnotherapy CD to use at home to help the hypnotic suggestions become a permanent state of mind. This is a very brief therapy which will change your life if you are ready.   Return to top of page
